Documentaries Ripped From the Headlines Are Becoming Harder to See

Reporter Marc Tracy examines how several topical documentaries, despite receiving critical praise and international awards, are struggling to secure distribution deals. Major streaming platforms have reportedly expressed disinterest in acquiring “social-issue docs,” marking a stark contrast to two decades ago when films like Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) and An Inconvenient Truth (2006) were box office successes. Today, streaming platforms prioritize resources and promotional efforts toward the most eye-catching subjects: true crime and celebrities. While some filmmakers have turned to self-distribution platforms like Jolt and Gathr as alternatives, documentary programmers like Thom Powers worry this trend threatens an important cultural space for independent voices speaking truth to power.
