How the Internet Changed Politics: From Memes to the Insurrection

September 26, 2022
6:00 pm ET
John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum
This event is cosponsored by the Institute of Politics (IOP)

Radicalization, particularly seeded through online media and communities, has impacted American politics in ways not seen before. Would the January 6th insurrection have happened if not driven by online mobilization tactics like memes and viral content to spread disinformation, promote extremist ideology, and prompt real-world action? Join us in the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum for a conversation on misinformation, disinformation, and how it spreads through online communities.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Gabriella Coleman, Professor of Anthropology, Harvard University
  • Dr. Joan Donovan, Research Director, Shorenstein Center, and HKS Adjunct Lecturer
  • Emily Dreyfuss, writer, Senior Managing Editor of the Technology and Social Change Project, and co-Lead of the Harvard Shorenstein News Leaders Program
  • Brian Friedberg, Senior Researcher, Technology and Social Change Project, Shorenstein Center
  • Garrett Graff (Moderator), Journalist, Historian, and Director, Cyber Initiatives, Aspen Digital
