Can They Do Good and Still Do Well? Local TV Stations and Communities’ Information Needs
Focus Areas
Advancing rigorous research, expert support, and recognition for journalism that informs the public and strengthens democracy.
The Shorenstein Center was founded to study the influences of the traditional press on politics, and public policy, and we carry forward this mission by deeply engaging with the systems, practitioners, and impacts of journalism in today’s rapidly evolving information environment.
Our research examines the challenges and opportunities facing traditional news media, from shifts in technology and audiences to economic pressures and the changing forces buffeting news organizations. Recognizing the vital role played by local reporters and journalists working in understaffed newsrooms, we provide resources and support to help them access expert academic research and authoritative information relevant to the pressing issues in the news cycle.
In addition to fostering informed reporting, we also celebrate and honor outstanding journalism through our prestigious awards programs, which recognize high-impact work that makes a difference in public understanding and policy. Through these interconnected efforts, the Center strives to strengthen and support journalism as a cornerstone of democracy and civic life.
