CHIP50 Report #116: AI across America: Attitudes on AI usage, job impact, and federal regulation
Focus Areas
Examining how generative AI is shaping media creation, industry practices, and trust in information—and the policies emerging to address it.
Documentary Film in the Public Interest Initiative, The Journalist’s Resource
The Shorenstein Center’s research on Generative AI investigates how this rapidly advancing technology is transforming media creation, journalism, and the broader information environment. We study the ways in which generative AI tools are being used by journalists, media organizations, and independent creators to produce content—raising new questions about authorship, accuracy, and editorial standards. Our work also examines the profound impacts these technologies may have on media industries, from shifting economic models to the acceleration of misinformation and the potential erosion of public trust in information. Additionally, we analyze the policy and regulatory landscapes emerging in response to generative AI, considering how governments, platforms, and civil society can address the ethical, legal, and societal challenges posed by these tools. Through cross-disciplinary research and collaboration, we aim to shed light on the opportunities and risks of generative AI for public interest media and the future of democratic discourse.
