The Journalist’s Resource

The Shorenstein Center was founded to study the influences of the traditional press on politics, and public policy, and we carry forward this mission by deeply engaging with the systems, practitioners, and impacts of journalism in today’s rapidly evolving information environment.

Our research examines the challenges and opportunities facing traditional news media, from shifts in technology and audiences to economic pressures and the changing forces buffeting news organizations. Recognizing the vital role played by local reporters and journalists working in understaffed newsrooms, we provide resources and support to help them access expert academic research and authoritative information relevant to the pressing issues in the news cycle.

In addition to fostering informed reporting, we also celebrate and honor outstanding journalism through our prestigious awards programs, which recognize high-impact work that makes a difference in public understanding and policy. Through these interconnected efforts, the Center strives to strengthen and support journalism as a cornerstone of democracy and civic life.

The Future of Federal Funding at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

The Future of Federal Funding at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

For decades, U.S. colleges and universities where at least 25% of undergrads are Hispanic have received federal grants to help them expand educational opportunities and improve graduation rates for Hispanic students. In September, however, the U.S. Department of Education slashed funding for these schools, formally designated as “Hispanic-serving institutions.” Meanwhile, a federal lawsuit making its way through the courts argues that distributing public money to higher education institutions based on their percentage of Hispanic students is discriminatory and violates the U.S. constitution. This free webinar focuses on the fate of hundreds of public and private colleges and universities, which, together, serve most of the nation’s Hispanic undergraduate students.
