Documentary at Risk: Strategies for Ethics, Sustainability, and Innovation in a Time of Disruption
Focus Areas
Exploring and supporting the evolving world of news and public interest media.
Documentary Film in the Public Interest Initiative, The Journalist’s Resource
At the Shorenstein Center we study the full landscape of contemporary news, civic information, and public interest content production, from traditional journalism to documentary film, podcasts, and independent digital creators. We examine how new technologies, audience expectations, and economic forces reshape the creation, shaping, and sharing of stories and information across formats and platforms.
Alongside our research, we help journalists and digital news creators connect with and integrate academic research into their reporting, acting as a bridge between scholarship and practice. Through convenings, workshops, and resources, we support journalists, filmmakers, and creators in navigating new challenges and opportunities in the evolving media environment.
Additionally, we recognize and celebrate excellence through our prize programs for outstanding journalism and documentary film on public policy issues, underscoring our commitment to supporting impactful media in the public interest.
