CHIP50 Report #114: TikTok in a time of peril: American usage patterns and demographic trends

With TikTok’s very existence dominating the news cycle, this January 2025 report from the Civic Health and Institutions Project’s (CHIP50) sheds light on which Americans are using the app and how often they use it. Researchers note TikTok’s ascension as the leading challenger to Meta’s dominance in the social media space, with TikTok claiming 10% of American users’ attention compared to Meta’s 48%.

CHIP50’s survey data shows that TikTok users skew far younger than any other platform and is used by more non-White respondents. The app tends to be used by more women (46%) than men (36%), and by more Democrats (43%) than Republicans (38%). The report also links to the CHIP50 Social Media Tracker, which allows users to examine the demographic profile for each platform and track how it changes over time.
