Sara Archambault

Sara Archambault is Research Consultant at the Shorenstein Center’s Documentary Film in the Public Interest research initiative. From 2023-2026 she served as the inaugural director of the DFPI initiative.

Sara is an independent documentary producer dedicated to artful and impactful nonfiction filmmaking. Drawn to stories that reckon with history, power, and civic life, Sara champions films with bold vision and that center a practice of care and collaboration in their creation. Recent producing credits include the Indie Spirits-nominated RIOTSVILLE, USA (Sundance/Magnolia); THE OFFICIALS (TIME Studios); TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES (Rotterdam, MUBI); A DECENT HOME (Denver, America ReFramed), NO TIME TO FAIL (America ReFramed) and RICHLAND (Tribeca/Cinema Guild).

Her award-winning films have shown in festivals around the world and received support from the Sundance Film Institute, Ford Foundation, SFFILM, Catapult Film Fund, IDA, Perspective Fund and Democracy Fund among others. Sara was a 2024 Rockwood/Just Films Fellow, a 2020 Impact Partners Producing Fellow, a 2013 Sundance Creative Producers Lab Fellow and the 2020 SF DocFest Vanguard Awardee.

Sara was the founding Director of the Documentary Film in the Public Interest (DFPI) initiative at the Shorenstein Center, where she built a powerful program of fellows, research outputs, and convenings that brought new energy and understanding to the study of nonfiction film. Now a Research Consultant for the DFPI initiative, she is leading research focused on documentary and visual storytelling in platform-driven ecosystems.

Sara is a member of the Documentary Producers Alliance and a board member of the IRL Movie Club. A resident of Providence, RI, Sara is partner to a devoted public-school teacher, parent to two amazing children, and loves going to the movies by herself.
