Shorenstein Center launches 2026 Voting Information Trends Reports

Two new national surveys from the Shorenstein Center’s 2026 Voting Information Trends series find that Americans are entering the midterm elections with sharply different views of the greatest threats to election integrity, and substantial uncertainty about how mail voting works and whether mail ballots will be counted accurately.

The Shorenstein Center’s 2026 Voting Information Trends series tracks how Americans in the US get voting information and understand key topics about voting ahead of the 2026 U.S. elections — including voter registration, polling locations, and other voting mechanics.

Powered by the National Internet Observatory and the CHIP50 survey project, and done in collaboration with the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School, the research combines self-reported survey data with observed online behavior to produce quick-turn reports on the voting information landscape. The series will run throughout the 2026 election season.

The first reports examine voters’ election concerns and perceptions and knowledge of mail voting ahead of the 2026 midterms.

An interactive dashboard also gives a glimpse at how people are finding information about how and where to vote online. Using data from the National Internet Observatory, it tracks top sources of voting information as observed in real users who opt-in to the project.
